چکیده

The dayside cusp/cleft region is known as a major source of upflowing ionospheric ions to the magnetosphere. Since the ions are supposed to be energized by an input of energy from the dayside magnetospheric boundary region, we examined the possible influence of the interplanetary conditions on dayside ion beams and conics observed by the polarorbiting Exos-D (Akebono) satellite. We found that both the solar wind velocity and density, as well as IMF By and Bz, affect the occurrence frequency of ion conics. The energy of ion conics also depends on the solar wind velocity, IMF By and Bz. The ion beams around the local noon are not significantly controlled by the interplanetary conditions. The results reveal that ion convection, as well as the energy source, is important to understand the production of dayside ion conics while that of ion beams basically reflects the intensity of local field-aligned currents.

A statistical study of ®eld-aligned electron beams associated with ion conics events

A statistical study of ®eld-aligned electron beams associated with up ̄owing ion conics is presented from Exos-D (Akebono) observations below 10 000 km. The electron beams are narrowly collimated along the ®eld line and generally have energies of several tens of eV. They are divided in the analysis into three types: up ̄owing, down ̄owing, and counterstreaming. All the types of electron beams are ...

Modeling of occurrence frequencies of ion conics as a function of altitude and conic angle

The occurrence frequencies of dayside ion conics with various conic angles are obtained as a function of altitude from Exos-D (Akebono) observations. We made a model calculation of ion conic evolution to match the observation results. The observed occurrence frequencies of ion conics with 80 to 90 conic angle are used as an input to the model and the occurrence frequencies of ion conics with sm...

Superthermal Ion Signatures of Auroral Acceleration Processes

The retarding ion mass spectrometer on the Dynamics Explorer 1 spacecraft has generated a unique data set which documents, among other things, the occurrence of non-Maxwellian superthermal features in the auroral topside ionosphere distribution functions. In this paper, we provide a representative sampling of the observed features and their spatial morphology as observed at altitudes in the ran...

Direct measurements of the ionospheric convection variability near the cusp/throat

[1] For the first time precise measurements obtained using Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radars are used to quantify the temporal variability in the convection velocity and identify the cause of the variations for a particular event located in the vicinity of the cusp. Using SuperDARN line-of-sight (LOS) Doppler velocities near 1200 magnetic local time and a standard fitting tech...

Low and middle altitude cusp particle signatures for general magnetopause reconnection rate variations 1. Theory

We present predictions of the signatures of magnetosheath particle precipitation (in the regions classified as open low-latitude boundary layer, cusp, manfie and polar cap) for periods when the interplanetary magnetic field has a southward component. These are made using the "pulsating cusp" model of the effects of time-varying magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause. Predictions are ...
